Moving into a new home is exciting, but let’s be honest, it can also feel overwhelming! Between packing, organizing, scheduling movers, and remembering a million little details, it’s easy to get stressed. The good news? With the right plan in place, your move can be smooth and even enjoyable!

As a real estate agent serving Kalamazoo, Portage, and the surrounding Michigan communities, I’ve helped many families prepare for their big move. That’s why I created an 8-Week Moving Guide to take the guesswork out of the process. Below are a few highlights to help you get started.

1. Start Early (8 Weeks Out)

The earlier you begin preparing, the better. About two months before moving day, create a master checklist, begin decluttering, and lock in your moving company or truck rental. Starting early gives you room to breathe when unexpected things come up.

2. Purge Before You Pack (6 Weeks Out)

Don’t take items you don’t need into your new Kalamazoo or Portage home. Six weeks before the move, start donating, selling, or tossing things you no longer use. This makes packing lighter and helps you start fresh in your new space.

3. Collect Your Supplies (5 Weeks Out)

Save yourself from last-minute stress by gathering moving supplies in advance. Get sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and markers for labeling. Pro tip: many local stores around Kalamazoo and Portage give away free boxes—worth asking before you buy.

4. Label and Organize (4 Weeks Out)

A little organization now pays off on moving day. Label each box clearly with both the room and contents. Using color-coded labels by room is a game-changer and helps movers place boxes exactly where they belong.

5. Notify Utilities and Services (3 Weeks Out)

Set up your new home to be move-in ready. About three weeks before your move, notify your utility companies, update your address with banks, insurance, and subscriptions, and set up mail forwarding with USPS.

6. Pack a “First Night” Box (1 Week Out)

Your first night in your new home should feel like home—not like a scavenger hunt. Pack a box with pajamas, toiletries, medications, snacks, and chargers so you’re comfortable from day one.

7. Moving Day Strategy (Day Of)

Keep essentials and valuables with you, not on the truck. Make sure everyone helping you knows the plan—where things go and what needs special care.

8. Celebrate Your Fresh Start

When the last box is in place, take a moment to appreciate your new beginning. Moving is work, but it’s also the start of an exciting new chapter in your new home.

These tips are just a preview of my FEE Moving Guide that shows you an 8-week plan, including tips and resources. This complete resource twalks you through every step, from 87 days out to your first week in your new home. Whether you’re moving across town in Kalamazoo, relocating to Portage, or transitioning from out of state, this guide will make your move smoother and less stressful!
